This is a PSA to all the anti-trans spokespeople and “renegade” cis-gender (mostly white) male Youtubers who think they’re hard-hitting journalists by going to Target lying about being “trans” to show a scary future where MEN can enter the LADIES’ room (YOU ARE THE PROBLEM and I refuse to link their videos because no one should pay them any attention)*:

Stop using female privacy and safety as a justification for violating the rights of trans people.

Travis Weber in the above video (and many of his conspirators) love to advocate for these “bathroom bills” by creating a fear-based world where trans people using the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their individual gender identity would create a dangerous environment for women and children. Not only is this beyond asinine, but it is extremely transphobic and sexist.

As a woman, I can express that arguments like Weber’s are pure hateful rhetoric that do not accurately describe how women feel about trans people using the bathroom they prefer to, need to use. And may I remind you all, gender isn’t genitalia.

Moreover, these men need to stop painting the dual picture that 1) trans people are predators and 2) that women are weak creatures who need constant protection. Not only can most of us whoop your asses, but we HAVE to stop, as a nation, teaching little girls that they cannot protect themselves. These arguments are a toxic combination of transphobia and sexism that need to be stopped.

Trust me when I say women, including myself, are more concerned with trans people losing their freedom above all else.

There are plenty of amazing organizations and trans people who can explain these issues WAY better than me and I encourage people to educate themselves (I definitely can always learn something new) and also forward these groups, people, and stories onto those who DON’T understand trans rights. Education and persistence: it’s how we persevere in a time where we feel powerless.

*Sidenote: if men wanted to come in and harm women in the bathroom, they certainly wouldn’t have to go through the trouble of dressing like a female, etc. So, really, where are these idiots getting this idea that suddenly the floodgates will be open if a trans woman is allowed to use the women’s restroom? Bathrooms should just be genderless, but if they must be M or F, let’s just let people use whatever bathroom because honestly, everyone in the world just wants to avoid peeing their pants in Target. It’s basic decency people.
